Mc Donald’s or Dr Office ? Do Tell

September 18th, 2008

Many times doctors don’t know what its like to be a patient. They are in such a hurry that they forget that your not a number. They are rushed to go from patient to patient until the day ends.  This don’t help the patient especially when you are having a lot of issues with your health. You leave the office without some of your health issues addressed. Then you as the patient walk away disappointed and upset. I know myself that I hate calling  a doctor’s office in between office visits. I don’t want to be one of those annoying patients the office staff hate to receive calls from. I know this from both aspects because I was a Nursing Assistant. I don’t know if that’s a good thing or a bad thing. It was a job that I loved and was passionate about. I could leave work after being exhausted, but I felt full filled.  Now having the shoe on the other foot it is very difficult. I’ve been belittled by doctors and I’ve been ignored by many.I’ve also meet a few that have been real angels on earth. They’ve been compasionate and wonderful and others have been horrible. I went through years of hell being in pain and some people telling me it was in my head. After years I got some validation that my symptoms were real, not in my head. That’s enough to make a person feel crazy.

I think the biggest problem with doctors visits is the doctors are so rushed and many of them forget what its like to be a patient. They have only a certain amount of time to see a certain amount of patients. I know I’ve been at the doctors office and the buzzer goes off. Then the doctor needs to go to the next patient.I can remember when I was in CNA class they made us act like patients so we could understand what it was like to be a patient. They would put Vaseline on a pair of glasses and ask us to read something. Another exercise we had to use a wheelchair to get around and that was an obstacle especially with the Vaseline eye glasses. All in all I feel that doctors should have more time with patients because it would give the patients enough time to explain what’s going on with there health and time to address all the issues. I think if they have more time with patients it would save a lot of money and time because our issues would be addressed at the visit. Instead of feeling like your at the local Mc Donald’s drive through for  Cheeseburger and a small fry.

How does your doctor’s office visit make you feel? Do tell…  I’ll link you all up in a post if you give me a comment on this- :)   as a thank you….

I have to say that my doctor is great about at least making me think he has all the time in the world for me, but my eye doctor is the best. He actually makes notes about things in my personal life and will ask about them the next year. For a long time, I thought he truly remembered, but then happened to glance at some of the notes one time.

I am back and forth on doctors. I have been both helped and hurt by them. I don’t think many of them do really know what it is like to live with chronic pain and disability.

I am kind of difficult because I want to control my care instead of just doing the next med on the list. I tend to do a lot of research and I have lots of questions, although I have a great rapport with them, I suspect they think I am a loon.

I have a visit next week, and for the first time I have a friend going in with me to support me. He convinced me I need the support because I am too sick right now to be assertive enough and think clearly enough. He told me how when he had cancer he realized at some point he needed someone to go with him and recruited his mom and she went with him to all of his doctors visits and it really helped him.

I am so fortunate for this friend and his offer of support, his recognition that I need it. I have never had this kind of help before, in 15 years! It would be great to have an advocate to go with you to the doctor, someone who understands your illness and how it effects you in real life. Someone who can remember to ask the questions, and stick up for you if need be.

And that brings to mind my years working in nursing homes, the patients who had family or feisty friends checking in on them regularly always got natural priority because no one wanted trouble. Those left to themselves who were too sick to speak up or even care got left for last. That is horrible isn’t it? But these places were understaffed and the aides were often carrying double patient loads, so as much as you hustled you could not give equal time to all patients. This was a long time ago and maybe things have changed, but that is part of why I got out of the field, it was really depressing and there was nothing to be done except bust your tush and try to get everyone taken care of.

One other thing…I think it is very easy for doctors to prescribe medications because they do not have to live with the side effects or possible long term harm that comes from taking them. I have been given flack for refusing certain meds, as if i shouldn’t worry about the side effects which can be worse than the disease.

    Christine,
I’ve had issues with certain medications. i get so sick with the medication cymbalta. I feel like I have morning sickness morning, noon and night. Bad enough being in pain without adding vomiting to it. I’ve had some really weird reactions to med.One of the meds I’m on right now Its either be in extreme pain or deal with the side effects. Thanks for your comments.

    Christine,
I can totally empathize with you. I’m fortunate to have help at home. I worked in a nursing home at one time so I can totally understand the fact that patients with family present get better care. My message to anyone with a loved one nursing home be vigilante. You are that person’s advocate, but be reasonable because nursing assitants have thier hands full. Many times it was nothing to take care of 10 or more people. Some nights it was nothing to have 20 patients plus get some up in A.M. Its a wonder my back hurts so bad let along other issues. Make sure you take some notes before your appointment. I’ve got memory issues thanks to a stroke from lupus and plan old memory issues otherwise. Take care of yourself
