Flu Shot Time

October 19th, 2008

Its that time of year again- Flu Shot Time. Every year I have to get my flu shot and I do not enjoy shots at all. This year I have to get my pneumonia vaccine again. I had my flu shot last year, but I still got the flu. They said the flu shots were only about 20percent effective. Hopefully this year the flu shots will be more effective. I am hopping to go and get one of them this week and the other shot in a couple of weeks. I don’t like getting the shot because I always feel bad after I get theseĀ  shots.

Are You Planning to Get your Flu shot this Year or are You taking Your Chances?

I won’t be getting the flu vaccine. I urge anyone considering getting the flu vaccine to check out http://www.gbs-cidp.org before getting the vaccine or to at least do some serious research on all of the possible side effects of it.

One of the more common side effects of the flu vaccine is the devastating and potentially life threatening Guillian-Barre Syndrome. I watched as my friend’s 6 year old sister went from happy and healthy to in ICU at Children’s Hospital within two days from GBS. She was paralyzed and on a respirator. She was one of the lucky ones and eventually made a full recovery, however it took months of intensive rehab where she was taught how to walk and eat all over again. The latest research is showing that the initial central nervous system damage done by GBS will cause problems later in life, regardless of whether or not the person originally made a full recovery.

I have the chronic form of GBS known as Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy. I wouldn’t wish it on anyone which is why I sincerely hope people at least do some solid research before getting the flu vaccine.
