Taking Care of Patients with Dignity

January 8th, 2009

Working as a Certified Nursing Assistant part of my job was to take care of a lot of patients with had Urinary Catheters. Some of them had issues with urinary incontinence and other had chronic health conditions that required the urinary catheters for bladder control. One of my patients had a catheter because she had Multiple Sclerosis that affected her kidneys. It helped her maintain her dignity while living with her chronic illness. Her catheter required a lot of care to prevent her from getting a Urinary Tract Infection. It helped that she took regular supplements of cranberry pills. We had to wash the catheter with soap and water, and Alcohol. Her catheter had to be changed once a month by the nurses. They always had to take special precautions to prevent the procedure of inserting the catheters from being unsterile. They would have to order the supplies for her catheter from a medical supply store each month. My patient’s insurance company would pay for her medical supplies each month. She used a closed catheter set to prevent bacteria from causing any added health issues. By having proper care of her catheter she was able to maintain an active life style where she could see her family and friends frequently outside of the nursing home.

I have MS and am glad to hear you say, treat patients with dignity. I am thankful I do not have the kidney problem anymore but there is always a challenge.

    Thanks for the award cashmere.

    Kimberly,

I have taken care of a few people with MS when I was a CNA. I alway treated all my patients with dignity and respect. It was challenging. I treated my patients as I would like to be treated.
